Editing

Two Types - Classic Continuity, and Montage

Continuity - follows a clear narrative with editing that flows. Shows a clear beginning, middle and end.

Montage - more artistic, more experimental styles of editing and approach to narrative.

In Music Videos -

Classic continuity
Furthers the narrative
Has a limited range of shot types in order to have a seamless movement
Narrow set of editing

Montage
Not a key function of linear narrative
Movement appears 'disjointed'
Interest in expressive frames, angles and shots
Editing conflict with each other
Makes use of a variety of editing possibilities
Discontinuity
Viewer is challenged to see meaning and new ideas

Polysemic - a diversity of meanings for a given word
